Simon Eisinger

Architect, Lynch / Eisinger / Design

Simon Eisinger is a New York-based architect and a partner in Lynch / Eisinger / Design. Born and raised in New York City, he studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology, with minors in Acoustics and Literature. Graduating in 1990 with the MIT Award for Excellence in Architecture, Simon moved to Germany to spend a year working for Behnisch and Partners on the project team for the new German Parliament. He returned to New York for a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University, where he received the 1993 SOM Foundation Traveling Fellowship and the 1994 AIA Medal for Excellence in the Study of Architecture. Simon traveled extensively in Europe and the Near- and Far-East, and worked in the offices of Smith-Miller and Hawkinson, Pei Cobb Freed, and Gabellini Associates. As Project Architect with Gabellini, he was largely based back in Germany working on a variety of projects in Germany, France, and Italy. In 1999, Simon teamed up with Christian Lynch to form Lynch / Eisinger / Design, an architecture and design firm specializing in high-end retail and showroom design and residential projects.

Simon’s design approach is influenced by the writings and work of Aldo Van Eyck, with equal attention to the experiential and tactile aspects of construction and to the tectonic logic that goes into making something. “There must be an underlying sensibility that guides every aspect of a given work, but the end user need not be conscious of it. Music can not meaningfully exist without the scale and tempo, but good music doesn’t hit you over the head with these basic structuring devices: it builds on them and goes beyond. Design of the physical environment is similar – but with function and economy mixed in, which constantly push back against the abstraction that other arts can afford.”
