Sandra Wheeler and Alfred Zollinger, Directors
MATTER PRACTICE is a collaborative design studio, so named as a deliberation of origins and aspiration as architects. Matter, via old French from Latin material, ‘timber, substance’, also ‘subject of discourse’ and Practice, from Greek praktikos, ‘concerned with action’.
Matter is concurrently engaged in architectural, exhibition design, speculative, or design/build projects – moving with ease between a diversity of roles from architect, educator, museum content developer, precision machinist, and all in between. Directors Sandra Wheeler and Alfred Zollinger first worked together after completing M.Arch degrees from Cranbrook Academy of Art. They share extensive prior experiences in construction and fabrication, which persists as a foundation of the practice.
Recent clients include the National Building Museum, International Center of Photography, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Integrative Medicine Foundation, and Sigerson Morrison Shoes. Matter was a finalist in the 2008 PS1/MoMA Young Architects Program, and is a winner of the AIA New Practices New York 2008. Alfred is currently interim director of the BFAs in Interior Design and Architectural Design at Parsons School of Design.
